  1. Sanskrit `justice, order' in Hinduism, the
  2. consciousness of forming part of an ordered
  3. universe, and hence the moral duty of
  4. accepting one's station in life. In Buddhism,
  5. dharma is anything that increases generosity
  6. and wisdom, and so leads towards
  7. enlightenment. For Hindus, correct
  8. performance of dharma has a favourable effect
  9. on their karma; this may enable them to be
  10. reborn to a higher caste or on a higher plane
  11. of existence, thus coming closer to the final
  12. goal of liberation from the cycle of
  13. reincarnation.
